It was the year 1970 when a spirited bunch of businessmen decided that they wanted to form an elite football team in the French capital. Guy Crescent and Pierre-Etienne Guyot chose to merge their newly formed side, Paris Football Club, with Stade Saint-Germain of Henri Patrelle after the team from Saint-Germain-en-Laye, 15km west of Paris, were promoted to Ligue 2. Real Madrid played a big part in the formation of Paris Saint-Germain. Three men were unable to come up in the dilemma of financial viability of the venture until they had a meeting with President of the Real club Santiago Bernabeu.

Bernabeu said to them that beginning an online campaign was the most effective way to create the new team. After an online petition signed by more than 20,000 members, Paris Saint-Germain Football Club was officially established on August 12, 1970. The first time ever during French soccer history fans were financially involved in the creation of the football club. The capital club that was formed had large fan bases due to the merger, and also benefited greatly from an improved team. It was helmed by Jean Djorkaeff, the club's first superstar, PSG gained promotion into Division 1 and won its 1970-1971 French Division 2 title in the very debut season. Due to a difficult financial situation that was exacerbated by it was the Paris City Council offered to take care of the club's debt and then demanded to change their name to a name more Parisian namesake that reads "Paris Football Club." Following PSG President Henri Patrelle refused the name change, and financial support was removed The club disbanded in 1972. Paris FC remained in the top division, while PSG were relegated administratively to Division 3.

PSG was launched after the fashion creator Daniel Hechter took over. In the days before the start of the 1973-74 season, Hechter took over from Henri Patrelle as president and appointed Francis Borelli as vice-president. In addition to providing financial support towards the football club Hechter was also the designer of PSG's iconic home outfit. After two promotions in the era of French famous legend Just Fontaine, Paris Saint-Germain quickly returned to the top division in 1974. It was ironic that it happened in the same year that Paris FC slipped into the division below, and was moved to the Parc des Princes, which at the time had been the home ground of PFC. Since since then, PSG have never abandoned the top division of French football, nor the Parc. Prior to this, PSG had been playing at various grounds, like that of the Stade Municipal Georges Lefevre, the Stade Jean-Bouin and Stade Jean-Bouin, Stade Bauer, and even the Parc des Princes several times throughout the season, despite resistance of PFC.

The team was headed by Daniel Hechter, the Parisians did not win any silverware during the 1970s but started their long tradition of spectacular Coupe de France runs, established themselves as a top half division 1 team, and attracted a number of famous players, like Jean-Pierre Dogliani Mustapha Dahleb, and Carlos Bianchi. Following Hechter was barred for life from the game from the French Football Federation in January 1978 for allegedly running an unsavory scheme that involved tickets sold at Parc Des Princes Francis Borelli, who was vice-president up until that point was appointed the new head for the Ile-de-France club. The trophy cabinet of the club welcomed their first silverware major, with the assistance of superstar signings Joel Bats, Dominique Bathenay, Safet Susic and Dominique Rocheteau together with PSG Academy graduate Luis Fernandez who guided the capital team into two straight French Cup titles in 1982 and 1983. These wins have opened Paris the door to Europe and included their stunning international debut during the Champions' European Cup Cup which saw them advance to the quarterfinals in the tournament. PSG was the first team to win its league title in the year 1986. The team was led by Susic Joel Bats, Luis Fernandez and Dominique Rocheteau The Red and Blues dominated the championship from beginning to end with a remarkable 26 games without losing towards the championship.

The sequel to the league title wasn't as glistening, however. PSG placed eighth in the 1987-87 French Division 1 and their first UEFA Champions League appearance that season was a total failure. They were eliminated by the minnows Vitkovice in the opening game of the 1986-87 European Cup. The next one, PSG avoided relegation on the final day of the 1987-88 season with an impressive 4-1 victory over Lens on the Parc of Princes. The club was heavily indebted. had a brief respite to fight to win the title in 1988-89 alongside Marseille before slipping to decline.
