When shooters take the rifle and aim it and aim, all important is their target. The rest of the world fades away. When the thought of winning a lot of money in their heads, their instincts will be the trigger. If their years of waking early, working more hours to training and even sacrificing your favorite foods were worth it is decided in this moment. It's to this moment that 19-year-old Ayushi Podder works hard!

Each time Ayushi is shooting, her aim is much more than the "Bullseye" shot. She is aiming at an Podium Finish! Each time she puts her trigger, she shoots the bullet to her dream of the Olympic medal that hangs on her neck, and the tricolored flag fluttering over her.

Aayushi is an aspiring junior rifle shooter and the newest young sensation in shooting from India to gain prominence in the field, following Manu Bhaker and Gayathri nityanadam, Mehuli Ghosh and others. Born on the 23rd day of October in 2000. Aayushi comes from Sheoraphuli, Hooghly of West Bengal.

Aayushi's enthusiasm and skill in shooting comes through her father Pankaj Podder, who himself was an ex- Indian shooter as well as an International Shooting Sport Federation ( ISSF) licensed and qualified coach.

Schooling Days And Sacrificed Dreams

Aayushi was totally devoted to the study of her years during her time at Techno Indian Public School. Unexpectedly, even though she was exposed to sports at an early age, she showed very little or any passion for shooting.

At the age of seven, Aayushi was seven years old, she was able to create a portfolio with the hope of becoming an actress or model. She also learned to dance at a Classical Odisha style and participated in various school activities.

In the latter part of her life, Pankaj used to travel across states to play in matches. Aayushi was not aware that one day she'd follow in his steps. A very good academic performer, Aayushi wished to study MBBS when she was a teenager.

Start of Shooting Career

Things turned a bit shortly after her father asked her to try shooting. Pankaj confessed to his dream of watching his daughter follow in his steps. "When the daughter I had was only five and a half, I had the idea I could make her the next shooter Olympic champion," the father of two says.

Soon after, she began to train for the sake of her father. In just seven days of being able to hold her air rifle Ayushi became a national champion!

"It is my very first time competing but I already was a winner!" she says, with excitement heard in her voice. Her first major win spurred Junior Podder to take up shooting.

With her father's strong support and support, she was never looking back. As time passed by, Aayushi immersed herself into shooting and discovered an exciting new sport to shed blood for. With her determination and drive to shoot, the teachers and principal also began to show their support as she began her next adventure.

However, to be successful in the field of shooting an athlete requires the most focused focus. For Ayushi her concentration and focus came easily. This is why she could get high marks. "I'm excellent at academics. Concentration and focus are essential and these two abilities assisted me shooting quite a bit."

Ayushi also understands the value of perfection in her career and in her daily life. In the beginning of her practicing, she's father told her "Ayushi is the only one who can take a best sight picture". These words have been very helpful to her in her international career. They've been embedded in her brain. "Perfection is essential," she tells.

After becoming the state champion, Ayushi won the pre-national championship for juniors in the youth category the next month. Within an entire calendar year Aayushi has secured her spot to participate at the Indian team camp. Soon after, she was selected for the Asian air gun team, and in the following year, she earned her first international gold medal at the ISSF Junior World Cup 2016, Suhl, Germany.

The challenges faced by Indian athletes

Achieving success as an athlete in India isn't always as easy. It's true that Ayushi is no exception. The young shooter has plenty of forgotten stories to tell about her trips to various locations for competitions. One of them happened on she returned from Asian Junior Championship in Doha, Qatar.

Ayushi along with her group arrived at 5 am at New Delhi from a long and exhausting flight. This is when she learns that she will be competing in the 11:00 AM slot to participate in the 50m Rifle 3 Positions event at the All India Inter-University Championship. In the midst of sleep and hunger the young shooter took part in the competition and won the bronze medal.

After she spoke about the event, Ayushi opened up about the incident without any regret. She is not blaming her stomach or sleep deprivation for her loss. Also, she does not blame ineffective planning of the organizers.

This morning, Aayushi laughs it off. This is an additional addition to the lengthy list of organizational and structural issues athletes have experienced and continue to face in the system of sports in India.

In the World Championship in Changwon, Korea, Ayushi had to be separated by eight days between her arrival to match day. She was not able to practice during these eight days because of the scheduling of other games. Furthermore, her rifle was not in good condition. This led to a bad experience at the event.

And to make matters even more difficult Ayushi's father, as well as her personal coach was not able to accompany her because of budgetary problems. This is a common issue facing athletes in India in the present. The athletes are in financial straits to purchase equipment, travel for training, eat nutritious food and many more.

Balance between shooting and schooling

Despite having to balance academics with shooting classes and traveling to attend events, Aayushi's grades in school didn't drop. After graduation from high school she decided to pursue an education in Humanities which allowed her to concentrate on her the study of her subject and shooting.

At present, Ayushi Podder is pursuing her undergrad degree in Public Administration at Punjab University at the same at the same time as she trains and participates in competitions. But, Ayushi believes that it could not have been achieved without the help of her school and the management.

Ayushi is not able to use an attendance bar because of her inclusion in the Sports Quota. She can exercise all year long and is only required to sit for tests. In some cases, when competitions or selections conflict with her examinations The college schedules specific dates for her to sit the test.

A one-day in the life Ayushi Podder

As her father did, Ayushi travels a lot. Through all of the time, Ayushi is a participant in at minimum ten competitions in her country. In addition, there are trials for selection, and up at least three International competitions the course of a year. In addition to her travels for different competitions, she often goes to Delhi to train in Dr Karni Shooting range. Dr Karni Shooting range, because it's the only place that she can train at in the 50m categories.

Ayushi must also travel to Chandigarh for university every day. Between training, competitions, and college, she's hardly capable of staying at her home.

A typical day for the youthful shooter in West Bengal begins at 5.30 morning. She gets up, wakes up and then has a quick warming-up. At 7.30 am, Aayushi is on the breakfast table. After breakfast, she heads off for her training.
