This is a list of the international sports associations, each of which functions as a non-governmental governing body for specific sports and regulates the sport at a worldwide scale, often drafting rules in the sport, and promoting it to fans and prospective spectators as well as developing potential players and organising world or continental championships. Certain international sports federations, like FINA, the International Swimming Federation and the International Skating Union, may regulate multiple activities, which are often referred to in the common sense as distinct sports. FINA is an example, which governs swimming diving, synchronised swimming and water polo as distinct "disciplines" within the single "sport" of Aquatics.

International sports federations constitute an integral component of both the Olympic and Paralympic movements. Each Olympic sports is represented by its own international sports federation. This is then responsible for coordinating the events of its game during Games. In order for a sport to be recognized as an Olympic sport the international sports federation must be recognized through the International Olympic Committee.

Additionally, an international sports federation has to be recognized through the International Paralympic Committee to allow its sport to be an official paralympic sport. it is the case that several Paralympic Sports are managed by a special group of the International Paralympic Committee in its own right, in accordance with World Para branding, for example track and field athletics for athletes who are handicapped is controlled by the IPC itself, under the designation "World Para Athletics". Other Paralympic sports are managed within the structure of the equivalent for the physically abled that is, for instance, the UCI regulates both able-bodied and paralympic cycling.
